Inside the Design: Citizen, Barrage, and Warsaw Redesigns

The three new heritage bags

This season, we're all about modernizing our most iconic silhouettes as we gear up for Chrome Industries' 30th anniversary next year. Revisiting these legendary styles for Fall, we aimed to reimagine them with lighter materials, upgraded features for enhanced functionality, and improved comfort for those always on the move.

Our revamped Heritage collection keeps the timeless designs you love, while incorporating innovative elements that make these the best versions yet. We caught up with Chrome’s Product Director, Nate Kuder, to get the inside scoop on the exciting updates to these classic bags.

CHROME: Can you tell us what inspired you to revamp icons like The Barrage, Citizen, and Warsaw?

NATE: A lot has changed since these iconic bags were first designed—everything from materials and construction methods to how people use them. It was time to update these classics with more durable construction techniques, lighter materials, and features tailored to today’s everyday needs.

CHROME: What excites you most about these revamped styles?

NATE: What excites me the most is how much lighter we’ve made these bags without sacrificing durability. Back in the 90s, heavy gear was seen as high quality, but that’s not true anymore. These new designs are 20-30% lighter while keeping their signature lifetime durability and adding even more functionality.

CHROME: What are the key innovations in each of the new styles?

NATE: For the Citizen, the biggest upgrades are the left-right swappable shoulder strap, a new laptop sleeve, and a swappable seatbelt buckle. For the Barrage and Warsaw, it’s the improved organization and the revamped backpanel and shoulder strap comfort.

CHROME: How much lighter are the new versions compared to the old ones?

NATE: The new designs are 20-30% lighter, depending on the style.

CHROME: Are these bags PFAs-free? Do they contain recycled materials?

NATE: Yes, all styles are PFAs-free and made from recycled materials. The outer shell is recycled nylon, the pocket linings are polyester, and the tarp liner is crafted from recycled safety autoglass.

CHROME: Can you talk about sizing for each bag? How did you decide?

NATE: For the Citizen, we offer 24L and 15L options, based on the most popular volumes of the original Citizen and Mini Metro. These are perfect for bike commuting and everyday use. The Warsaw keeps the same internal volume as the original but adds four modular external cargo straps for versatile carry. The Barrage follows our proven volumes, with a new 18L size to round out the series.

CHROME: Any other standout features you’re excited about in these styles?

NATE: Absolutely! I love the magnet-closure drop pockets and laptop pockets on both the Citizen and Warsaw. Plus, the updated backpanels on the Warsaw and Barrage take comfort to a whole new level.

CHROME: Which bag are you carrying right now, and why?

NATE: I’m all about the Warsaw. It’s got that classic messenger backpack look with modern features and incredible adaptability—it’s just perfect for my everyday carry needs. By incorporating specific product features, lightweight materials, and recycled components, this revamp addresses modern customer needs while maintaining Chrome Industries’ commitment to quality and functionality.
