Like everyone here at Chrome, our lead designer, Ian Kenny, has a deep appreciation for our heritage designs, which incorporate heavy-duty construction, tarp liners, and overbuilt functionality. But Ian has been working on something new, and we sat down with him to chat about it.
"While those (heritage) bags remain core to the brand," he said, "we saw an opportunity to create a simpler, lighter everyday platform."
Over the course of a year's work, that goal resulted in two backpacks that marry Chrome's classic durability with a lightweight liner, breathable back panel, and streamlined organization system. These backpacks are the Recruit and the Initiate. While both were created with the same general idea in mind, each is a unique addition to Chrome's lineup.
When asked to tell us about the new features each bag brings, Ian had this to say:
"The Initiate features rear laptop access, letting you reach your computer through a dedicated back-panel zipper without opening the rolltop—making airport security, commuting, and daily use much faster. It also features a new compact seatbelt buckle; it's the first Chrome backpack to do so. It brings that iconic Chrome look and function in a lighter, more practical size for everyday carry."
The Recruit, on the other hand, features a quick-access zip opening. This provides fast, secure access to your gear without the added steps involved in opening a flap-top or rolltop. Like the Initiate, the Recruit features our signature metal buckle in a smaller form—bringing the Chrome vibe without compromising the bag's fast, lightweight design.
In addition to these new features, we couldn’t forget about our u-lock carrying standard. Both bags introduce a side carry bungee mechanism integrated into the newly gusseted side pockets. Working as both a u-lock stabilizer pocket, and/or a water bottle pocket.
Clearly, with designs that reduce weight and make access easier, this collection will appeal to anyone looking for a bag for their next trip, near or far. When asked what makes these new bags especially appealing to travelers, Ian said:
"On top of their other features, the Initiate and Recruit were designed with a luggage pass-through on the back panel that slides securely over rolling luggage handles. The lightweight construction makes them comfortable to carry all day without sacrificing durability. Simple organization, weather-resistant materials, and versatile storage make them ideal for commuting across town or flying cross-country."
These backpacks were obviously Ian's main focus for the season, but he still had one more trick up his sleeve: the cherry on top for Chrome fans looking for something a little more core for their fall pickup.
That trick is the Micro Kadet. True to its name, the Micro Kadet looks and acts like a miniaturized version of its 5-, 9-, and 15-liter siblings.
"Some folks only need the essentials," Ian said. "(...) The Micro Kadet strips the iconic Kadet down to its smallest, most efficient form while still carrying Chrome's DNA, including a U-lock holster, making it perfect for quick rides and everyday movement around the city.
